The natural performance enhancer NuStart, developed by Provimi, has now been added to the company’s full range of milk replacers.

Calves fed on milk replacers with NuStart have shown consistently improved growth rates compared with calves on more traditional milk replacers. NuStart is a unique combination of essential oils, probiotics, natural antioxidants and a prebiotic. It includes a precise profile of vitamins and trace elements for young calf development.

Paying extra attention to neonatal piglets the first hours post partum is worthwhile. It helps to encourage colostrum intake which leads to better protection against specific pathogens. And later in life, pigs suffer less disease and incur reduced mortality rates and better growth. Provimi has investigated the importance of colostrum distribution, colostrum quality and piglet performance.

Coccidiosis is a very common disease in poultry. Infection with coccidia parasites seriously impairs the growth and feed utilization of poultry and is estimated to costs the US poultry industry alone already more than $1.5 billion in annual losses.

Coccidiosis is induced by parasites and it affects mainly the intestinal tract. Coccidia are microscopic, spore-forming, single-celled parasites belonging to the apicomplexan class Conoidasida. The disease spreads from one animal to another by contact with infected feces or ingestion of infected tissue.

 Within a month of graduating with a Masters in Animal Science from Wageningen University in the Netherlands, Ron van Puijenbroek finds himself in the Provimi milk and dairy products team – as sales manager.

The birth of a new calf and the beginning of the lactation period are important milestones in dairy farming. The subjects of Provimi’s cattle seminar were therefore transition management and calf rearing.
